Breel Embolo Signs for Rennes in €15 Million Deal

Breel Embolo has officially signed with Rennes. He joined from Monaco for €15 million. The Swiss striker’s arrival is key as Rennes looks to strengthen its attack after losing key players.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Rennes and Monaco agreed on a €15 million transfer fee for Embolo. Rennes changed plans during the window and chose him as a target. Embolo, 28, was out of favor at Monaco and hadn’t played this season. Rennes lost striker Arnaud Kalimuendo to Nottingham Forest and needed a number 9. Embolo signed a four-year deal to answer that need. Monaco, out of the title race but fighting for Europe, let him go after months in exile.

RENNES’ SITUATION THIS SEASON

Rennes are having a tough start in Ligue 1. They are currently 9th, with 4 points from three matches. The team has had trouble replacing Kalimuendo, who scored 17 league goals last season. Though Estéban Lepaul started well, Rennes need another striker. The attack doesn’t have a traditional number 9, so Embolo is key as they aim to improve. They play at Lyon next, and it’s a chance to gain momentum.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Embolo wants to revive his career after frustrations at Monaco. He will be eager to bring his experience and physicality to the Rennes front line. Manager Habib Beye will likely introduce him quickly, especially with big matches on the horizon. Rennes will count on his know-how in French football to close the gap to the top six. There is a chance Embolo will partner Lepaul as Rennes look to rise up the table.
