Brentford Reject Lyon Loan Move For Fabio Carvalho

Brentford have turned down a loan offer from French club Lyon for midfielder Fabio Carvalho. Lyon wanted a loan deal with an option to buy, but Brentford said no.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Lyon wanted Fabio Carvalho to strengthen their attack. They offered a loan deal that could turn into a permanent move. However, Brentford rejected the offer. Carvalho joined Brentford from Liverpool in August 2024 for up to £27.5 million. Head coach Thomas Frank has praised Carvalho’s talent and called him a key player. Frank previously described the 21-year-old as a hardworking player who contributes something different to the squad and club culture. Since his arrival, he has regularly played for the team in various positions, showcasing his ability in attack.

BRENTFORD’S SEASON SO FAR

Brentford have struggled at the start of the new Premier League season, with just one win and two draws from their opening four matches. They have four points and are currently 15th in the table, just four points above the relegation zone. Carvalho has started all of the team’s league games so far, but would be frustrated with his lack of goal involvement. The midfielder is yet to register an assist or goal in the league, but is still adjusting to life at the club and has shown encouraging signs with his passing and positioning on the field. Brentford is currently sitting 13th in the Premier League after three games and will face 10th-placed West Ham United, another club fighting to climb the table, who are currently three points above them. The fixture could prove crucial for both sides as they hope to bridge the gap to mid-table.

WHAT NEXT FOR BRENTFORD AND CARVALHO?

Brentford’s decision to reject Lyon’s offer suggests they remain serious about keeping Carvalho for now. Despite his slow start at the club, the midfielder is expected to improve over the next few months and the team believes that he can help boost their results as they seek to climb the Premier League. Lyon, meanwhile, have been struggling in Ligue 1 this season and were looking to freshen up their squad as part of their battle to finish higher up the table, having finished sixth in Ligue 1 last season, narrowly missing out on Champions League qualification. However, now they must look elsewhere to strengthen their attack. Brentford’s decision represents a show of faith in a young player full of potential and supporters and management alike now hope to see him hit the ground running in order to help the club achieve their league goals.
