Brighton Shut Door On Manchester United’s Move For Carlos Baleba

Manchester United wanted to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba. But Brighton made it clear they did not want to sell him. United have stopped pursuing Baleba and will look for other midfield options during the transfer window.

WHAT LED TO UNITED’S DECISION?

Manchester United officially approached Brighton to sign Baleba. The 21-year-old Cameroonian midfielder was a target for United. However, Brighton responded by saying they would not consider any offers for Baleba, firmly stating that he is not for sale and has a contract until at least 2026. Baleba, who had a strong 2024/25 Premier League season, is valued by Brighton at least £87 million, indicative of their intention to keep him. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler expressed confidence that Baleba would stay and said Baleba was not distracted by the transfer speculation.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR BOTH CLUBS

United wanted Baleba to strengthen their midfield, as there were concerns about depth and creativity. However, Brighton’s stance left United with no room to negotiate. Brighton have already lost key players like João Pedro, who was sold to Chelsea for a fee in excess of £50 million, Pervis Estupiñán, and Simon Adingra. They want to maintain a strong core and reject offers that do not meet their expectations. Meanwhile, United have already added players like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Šeško to their attack, which they announced at Old Trafford.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR UNITED AND BRIGHTON?

With Baleba out of the picture, United are likely to pursue other midfield targets. Reports suggest Sporting captain Morten Hjulmand is now on their radar. Brighton will start their league campaign against Fulham and aim to improve on last season’s finish, where they secured eighth place in the Premier League. Manchester United, who finished fifteenth last season, will face runner-ups Arsenal in their first game. The outcome of these early matches and any further transfers could set the tone for both teams’ ambitions in the Premier League this season.
