Burnley Strengthens Defense with Axel Tuanzebe Signing

Burnley has signed defender Axel Tuanzebe on a free transfer after his contract with Ipswich Town ended. This move comes as Burnley prepares for their return to the Premier League for the 2025/26 season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Burnley confirmed the signing of Axel Tuanzebe, who joins the club on a one-year deal following the expiry of his contract at Ipswich Town. The 27-year-old defender played a key role in Ipswich’s promotion to the Premier League in the 2023/24 season and made 22 appearances in the top flight last season. Tuanzebe decided to stay in the Premier League and move closer to home, stating that the decision was easy after talks with Burnley manager Scott Parker. This signing accompanies Burnley’s recent additions, including Quilindschy Hartman from Feyenoord and goalkeeper Max Weiss, as the team strengthens its squad ahead of the new campaign.

TUANZEBE’S CAREER AND ROLE

Tuanzebe’s experience includes solid defensive performances for Ipswich Town, where he appeared 45 times in all competitions over the past season. His Premier League experience and familiarity with high-pressure matches will be valuable as Burnley seeks to improve from their Championship-winning campaign, during which they conceded only 16 goals and kept 30 clean sheets. Tuanzebe’s addition aims to bolster Burnley’s defense as they face tougher competition in the Premier League after their promotion.

According to a previous report, James Trafford has kept 29 clean sheets and conceded just 16 goals in 45 Championship appearances during the 2024/25 season with Burnley.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BURNLEY?

Burnley will look to integrate Tuanzebe and Hartman as they prepare for their opening Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur on August 16, 2025. The Clarets are eager to maintain their strong defensive form from the Championship while adjusting to Premier League challenges. The summer signings reflect Scott Parker’s intent to build a resilient squad capable of securing survival and aiming higher in the 2025/26 season.
