Callum Wilson Set to Leave Newcastle United After Contract Expiry

Callum Wilson will soon leave Newcastle United. His contract has expired, and they haven’t agreed on a new one. The striker is expected to officially part with the club in the coming days, closing an important chapter at St James’ Park.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Wilson‘s contract with Newcastle ended on June 30, 2025. There were talks of an extension, with the club reportedly offering an incentive-based deal because of his injury history. However, Wilson did not meet the appearance requirements for an automatic extension, and the club decided not to renew his contract on existing terms. As of July 1, the Premier League listed him as ‘released’, and both fans and staff are now waiting for the final confirmation of Wilson’s departure from the club.

HOW HE PERFORMED AT NEWCASTLE

Wilson faced a hard time at Newcastle last season due to recurring injuries. He made 22 appearances for the club, but only three of them were starts. Newcastle finished fifth in the Premier League, missing out on automatic Champions League qualification for the upcoming season after an inconsistent season and a high number of injuries in the squad. Their next fixture will be in the opening round of the 2025/26 Premier League against Aston Villa on August 16, which will be a different challenge compared to the previous season.

According to a previous report, Newcastle United ended 7th in the Premier League last season.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Wilson is now a free agent after being officially released by Newcastle. However, it is unlikely that he will remain unemployed for long, as several Premier League clubs are interested in signing him. For Newcastle, the departure of Wilson opens up a squad spot as they plan for a summer rebuild. The club will likely be active in the transfer market, addressing both attacking depth and overall squad fitness after a challenging campaign. Fans are now eager to see who will fill Wilson’s role and how the team will adapt with several veterans leaving the squad.

A previous report confirmed Newcastle United are completing transfer activities to build a stronger squad.
