Caoimhín Kelleher Joins Brentford in £18m Transfer from Liverpool

Brentford have added to their squad by signing goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher from Liverpool. The deal is worth up to £18 million, including add-ons. Kelleher, a Republic of Ireland international, spent a decade at Liverpool. He brings new competition to Brentford’s goalkeeping position.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Brentford completed the transfer of Kelleher for an initial £12.5 million. Performance-related add-ons could increase the deal to £18 million. Kelleher leaves Liverpool after often serving as backup to Alisson Becker. The 26-year-old is set to become Brentford’s new number one after Mark Flekken left the club.

KELLEHER’S JOURNEY AND BRENTFORD’S SEASON

Kelleher spent ten years at Liverpool and impressed in domestic cup competitions. He was a reliable backup in goal. Last season, he played 26 matches in all competitions and kept nine clean sheets. Brentford finished the 2024/25 Premier League season in 16th place. They narrowly avoided relegation by three points. After Flekken’s exit, Kelleher’s arrival aims to strengthen the squad for the new season.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BRENTFORD AND LIVERPOOL?

Brentford want to quickly integrate Kelleher before the season starts in August. They hope his experience can stabilize their defense. Brentford’s first match next season is against newly promoted Sunderland. Liverpool, meanwhile, clear up squad space and funds for their rebuilding. This includes pursuing top targets like Florian Wirtz. Both clubs aim to improve next season. Liverpool want to close the gap on the top four, and Brentford aim for Premier League safety.
