Carlo Ancelotti looks set to leave Real Madrid at the end of the season. The Italian manager is in talks to become the next head coach of the Brazil national team.
WHAT HAPPENED?
After losing to Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, Ancelotti’s position at the club is under threat. Reports say he will meet Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez in the coming days to discuss his exit. Ancelotti’s representatives have been in discussions with the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) and he is now wanted as the number one target to lead the national team, potentially before the start of 2026 World Cup qualifiers in June.
ANCELOTTI’S REAL MADRID ACHIEVEMENTS
Ancelotti has coached Real Madrid to two La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues in his two spells at the club. However, they are now in danger of finishing the season empty-handed, having been beaten in the Champions League semi-finals by Arsenal on their way to struggling behind leaders Barcelona in the league. Real are four points off the top of the table with five games remaining, while a determined Atlético Madrid are pushing behind them in third. Their next match is all-important as a slip-up could leave them further behind Barca.
ANCELOTTI SET FOR BRAZIL MOVE
Ancelotti’s departure will see Real Madrid searching for a new head coach, with Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso among the names reportedly under consideration. Meanwhile, Brazil, currently fourth in the South American World Cup qualification table after a disappointing run and the sacking of Dorival Junior, is eager to bring Ancelotti in ahead of the expanded 2026 World Cup. Talks are expected to finalise the contract details soon, with Ancelotti likely set to miss leading Madrid at the upcoming Club World Cup this June. Both clubs are entering pivotal periods requiring strong leadership and a new direction.
