Celtic Secure Benjamin Nygren in Five-Year Transfer from FC Nordsjælland

Celtic have officially signed Swedish winger Benjamin Nygren from FC Nordsjælland for €1.5 million. Nygren has signed a contract with Celtic until June 2029, with the club retaining an option to extend until 2030. He arrives in Scotland after an impressive season in Denmark and is seen as a significant addition to Brendan Rodgers’ squad.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Nygren becomes Celtic‘s third signing of the summer, joining Kyle Walker-Peters and Ajax goalkeeper Emin Bayram at Celtic Park. He played his final game for Nordsjælland in a 3-0 victory over Young Boys on Tuesday. Nygren is expected to have a medical on Wednesday afternoon, and then he will join his new teammates at Parkhead. A number of clubs from across Europe – including Premier League club Nottingham Forest – registered an interest in 23-year-old Nygren, who won both the league’s player of the year and young player of the year honours at the end of his first season in Denmark after joining Nordsjælland from Italian side Lecce.

His form earned him a call-up to the Swedish national squad and he subsequently made his debut in the Nations League fixture against England in June. Since that day, he has won a further five caps and scored his first three international goals, the latest of which was in the win over Poland last month.

WHY NYGREN MATTERS FOR CELTIC

Scotland’s Player of the Year finalist Nygren has been a revelation since moving to the Danish League from Italian Serie A side Lecce, where he was expected to be a key player this season before being booted out to Nordsjælland in June. Before making his Denmark debut, he had won just three caps for the Italian team and failed to score, so was not an integral part of the side.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CELTIC AND NYGREN?

The former AIK and AZ academy star joins a Celtic squad brimming with attacking talent as they prepare to battle it out with Rangers for the Scottish title.

Rodgers is now expected to turn his attention to strengthening his midfield and defence, but he remains excited about Nygren’s potential, with the player having had a taste of senior football at clubs including Lecce, Nordsjælland and AIK.
