Chelsea Boss Seeks Defensive Solutions After Colwill Injury

Enzo Maresca says Chelsea need a central defender after Levi Colwill’s injury. He also mentioned that the team is considering internal options to fix the problem.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Levi Colwill got a knee injury in training. Medical tests showed he damaged his anterior cruciate ligament. The defender went through surgery and will miss most of the 2025-26 season due to this injury according to reports. Although Maresca said a new centre-back is his “priority,” the club has yet to commit to a signing. Instead, the team is considering internal options like Jorrel Hato, Trevoh Chalobah, Renato Veiga and other youth prospects to fill the role.

CHELSEA’S SEASON SO FAR

Chelsea started the new Premier League season with over £240 million spent on attacking players. The team won the FIFA Club World Cup in July, and will be looking at trying to pose a challenge against the favourites to win the Premier League title, currenth champions Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City. Under Maresca, Colwill became a first-team regular, and now his absence creates uncertainty at the back. On Saturday, Chelsea will host Crystal Palace for the season opener.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHELSEA?

With the transfer window closing soon, Chelsea have shortlisted possible defensive targets. However, there is no guarantee of a new signing. Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile will return soon. Until Chelsea make a final decision, Maresca can rely on players already in the club. Good performances in upcoming matches could convince the board that a new signing is necessary. Chelsea are facing problems in defence after losing centre back Colwill to his serious knee injury as noted in earlier reports.
