Chelsea scored an important 3-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday at Stamford Bridge. This win increases their chances of reaching the Champions League. The Blues are now fifth in the Premier League, with only goals scored separating them from fourth-placed Newcastle United.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Chelsea started the game with great energy and scored in the third minute. Cole Palmer passed to Pedro Neto, who crossed the ball to the unmarked Enzo Fernandez. Fernandez kicked the ball low into the net for the first goal. Palmer’s next pass into the area led to an unfortunate own goal by Jarell Quansah after Virgil van Dijk’s clearance bounced off his teammate. Later, Liverpool’s Van Dijk scored in the 84th minute, but Palmer closed out the victory with a 96th minute penalty kick after Quansah fouled Moises Caicedo.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Chelsea is now on track for Champions League play next season. They are in the mix with Newcastle United for fourth place, both teams with identical point totals. Palmer played well for Chelsea and was involved in all three goals. His last goal was his first since mid-January. Liverpool, who have already locked up the Premier League title, fielded a weaker lineup but still were dangerous at times, especially when Van Dijk scored late in the game.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Chelsea will play Newcastle United on Sunday in what could be seen as a Champions League qualifying game. Both teams have the same amount of points, so this game could be critical for their European hopes. Even a tie could help both teams, but Chelsea has momentum after this big win over the new champions. If Enzo Maresca’s club reaches the Champions League, it will be important for player development, club finances and for attracting top talent in the next transfer window.
