Chelsea Open To Renato Veiga Sale Despite Levi Colwill Injury
Chelsea are considering the sale of Renato Veiga, despite Levi Colwill’s injury, as numerous clubs show interest in the starlet. Veiga is seeking to start afresh after dropping down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, as previously mentioned.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Veiga started and played the entirety of the UEFA Conference League final, which Chelsea won against Betis, but he returned to England in the summer following a successful spell with Juventus where he was a regular. Due to a shortage of left-footed centre-backs, the Italian outfit are yet again considering a loan deal for the defender after he failed to finalise a move away in the summer.
Veiga was close to leaving for Atletico Madrid but they pulled the plug at the last minute. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s head coach, has made signing a replacement centre back his main target before the looming transfer deadline according to recent reports. In recent weeks, Colwill was reported as injured for a long time, and as such, Chelsea are on the lookout for a replacement.
WHY WOULD CHELSEA SELL?
Due to the necessity of defensive reinforcements in the summer, Chelsea went on a spending spree by signing a lot of players like Veiga and others in the previous seasons, the team is decreasing its squad size and wage bill. However, Veiga has failed to impress Maresca, and although he remains on the club’s wish-list for a permanent deal as a homegrown player, his career has been on a downward trajectory.
The club believes issuing out another loan move is not a viable option and are willing to sanction his departure in the January window. Maresca is likely to part ways with the defender if a substantial offer comes in.
Veiga was reportedly furious with Chelsea for blocking a move away to Atleti in recent months, while the club also rejected offers from AC Milan and Atalanta in the summer transfer window.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR CHELSEA AND VEIGA?
Chelsea are one of the title contenders in the Premier League, having finished 4th last time around, and will likely be competing with Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City. Maresca’s side faces Crystal palace in the Premier League opener.
Veiga, meanwhile, will continue his push for a move away as the transfer window looms in the summer. He is likely to force a move if Maresca does not guarantee him game time next season.
