Chelsea Rule Out Summer Move for Emiliano Martínez

Chelsea have decided not to sign Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez this summer. Despite rumors linking the Argentine to the club, they prefer to strengthen other areas of the squad for the new season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Chelsea‘s goalkeeping situation has been uncertain due to Robert Sánchez’s inconsistent performances. However, the club is not pursuing talks with Aston Villa or Martínez‘s agents. Although Chelsea admire the 32-year-old, their priority is to bolster different positions. Martínez’s future remains uncertain as his current contract with Villa ends in July 2028.

WHY THE PLAN TO NOT ENTER TALKS WITH VILLA?

Chelsea finished fourth last season, ending their rebuilding phase and securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League. Despite a successful season, concerns linger about Sánchez conceding several goals, leading to queries about their transfer plans. However, Chelsea’s management, led by manager Enzo Maresca, has maintained its focus on strengthening outfield positions this summer.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Both Chelsea and Martínez’s situations are tied to Manchester United’s status. The Red Devils had favored the signing of Martínez, keeping him waiting before eventually signing fallen idol André Onana. However, Onana has continued to struggle on the pitch, leading to doubts about his position as the number one goalkeeper. Chelsea have been monitoring the situation at Old Trafford, knowing that United’s approach towards Martínez means Villa might face financial pressure to cash in on the goalkeeper during the upcoming window.

WHAT THEN IS THE FUTURE OF MARTÍNEZ?

Martínez delivered standout performances for club and country last season, earning the title of Villa’s Player of the Year. He ranked among the league’s top five goalkeepers for various statistics, contributing to Villa’s second consecutive appearance in the upper half of the table. Martínez has confirmed that he will not leave Villa for less than £57 million ($73 million), including his wages. Chelsea and United are well aware of these figures, waiting for Villa to make their move.
