Seventeen-year-old Chido Obi has become Manchester United’s youngest-ever starter in the Premier League. The forward earned his first start under Rúben Amorim for the match against Brentford.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Chido Obi, at 17 years and 156 days, was in the starting line-up to face Brentford. The forward breaks the previous club record held by Mason Greenwood, who debuted at 17 years and 223 days. This is a momentous day for Obi after a season of strong performances at youth level, where he has scored 14 goals and provided 2 assists in 21 matches with United’s U18 team. Amorim made several changes to his line-up, starting Obi at the centre of attack. This is United’s youngest-ever XI for a Premier League match. Only Dorgu, Ugarte, and Garnacho kept their places from the previous match. Amorim selected a fresh line-up against a strong Brentford side full of attacking threat.
RISING STAR BREAKS RECORDS
Chido Obi breaking through into the starting XI is an important moment both for Obi and the club as a whole. Manager Rubin Amorim said before the game, “I know it’s important for Chido, but I don’t want a lot of pressure. He played really well in the minutes against Wolverhampton. I feel he is ready to cope with the demands of the Premier League.”.
WHAT NEXT FOR UNITED AND OBI?
Manchester United hover around the middle of the table. They are aiming for an improved result under their new manager. The league is showing signs of turning following a strong recent run. Brentford, their opponents, are challenging for European places and recently beat Nottingham Forest in style. United will be hoping to contain Mbeumo and Wissa, who have been the league’s most productive attacking pair this season as well as crossing the ball.
