Cristian Romero Signs New Tottenham Deal Until 2029
Cristian “Cuti” Romero has signed a long-term contract with Tottenham Hotspur. The deal will keep him at the club until June 2029. Romero and his agent celebrated by expressing their desire to “keep making history.” The defender is taking on an even bigger role with the team.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Romero, now the official captain of Tottenham, signed a new four-year contract. This replaces his previous deal, which was set to end in 2027. This comes after a big week for the Argentine. He led Spurs to a 3–0 Premier League win against Burnley and also captained the squad in the UEFA Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain. Romero called the new contract decision “fantastic”. He talked about his strong connection to the club, the fans, and his life in London. Romero is the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur after previously serving as vice-captain. Now, he is a key figure after Son Heung-min moved to LAFC.
TOTTEHAM’S SEASON SO FAR
Tottenham had a strong start to the 2025/26 season. Under new manager Thomas Frank, they pushed PSG close in the UEFA Super Cup. They also easily beat Burnley to be joint top of the Premier League table after the first round of fixtures. Romero played 33 league games last season with five goals. He was also named the Europa League Player of the Season after helping Spurs win the trophy and qualify for the Champions League. His performances have made him a leader on and off the field. Romero’s new contract ends rumours of a move to Atlético Madrid and confirms his commitment to the club, where he has made 126 appearances since arriving in 2021.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ROMERO AND SPURS?
Tottenham face Manchester City next in the Premier League. Both teams have the same points after the first matchday, with City ahead on goal difference after beating Wolves 4-0. Tottenham want to keep their winning momentum. They plan to build on last year’s European success, aiming for a top-four finish or better. As captain, Romero’s new contract shows the club’s desire for stability and progress. They especially want to do well as Champions League football returns to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Romero, who recently won the Copa America with Argentina, is ready to lead the team into a promising future.
