Emerson Royal Completes Move to Flamengo in €9 Million Deal
Flamengo have signed right-back Emerson Royal from AC Milan on a permanent contract until December 2028. The €9 million transfer, confirmed by reports, marks a big return to Brazil for the 26-year-old, who has spent several seasons playing in Europe.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Emerson Royal, who played for Barcelona, Tottenham, and most recently AC Milan, has officially joined Flamengo. The €9 million agreement was finalized quickly after plans to join Besiktas fell through, as noted in various sources. Emerson wanted to return to Brazilian football. He arrived in Brazil this weekend to sign the contract, making Flamengo his first Brazilian club since 2019.
WHY FLAMENGO MADE THIS MOVE
Flamengo signed Emerson as they plan to sell their current right-back Wesley to Roma for around €25 million, which has been reported. Emerson is seen as a direct replacement and brings valuable experience from top European leagues. Flamengo are competing for the top spots in the Brasileirão Serie A, sitting second, just two points behind leaders Palmeiras. Their defense has been solid, conceding only 17 goals in 20 matches.
WHAT COMES NEXT FOR FLAMENGO AND EMERSON
Flamengo’s next match is against Fluminense, who are in 6th place, seven points behind Flamengo. This derby is key as Flamengo try to catch Palmeiras. Emerson could debut soon, adding depth and quality to the squad during an important phase of the season. His arrival is also a step toward re-establishing himself in the Brazil national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
