Emerson Royal Signs with Flamengo on Three-and-a-Half Year Deal

Flamengo has signed Brazilian defender Emerson Royal from AC Milan on a deal until December 2028, costing €9 million. This move brings Emerson back to Brazilian football after playing five years in Europe. According to reports, AC Milan agreed to sell Emerson Royal to Flamengo for €9 million.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Emerson Royal has joined Flamengo in a €9 million permanent transfer from AC Milan. His contract runs for three and a half years. Emerson, now at the top Brazilian club, returns home following stints with Barcelona, Tottenham, and Milan. His arrival coincides with Wesley’s expected move to Roma, effectively swapping right-backs for the Rio club.

FLAMENGO’S SEASON AND EMERSON’S ROLE

Flamengo are currently third in the Brasileiro Série A standings, with 36 points from 20 matches. They are three points behind second-placed Palmeiras and five points clear of Botafogo in fifth. This season, Flamengo is striving for a Copa Libertadores spot, and they hope Emerson’s experience will help strengthen their defense. Last season at Milan, Emerson played 26 league matches, providing two assists, and was reliable on the right side.

Flamengo hope his European experience brings stability and energy in a decisive moment.

LOOKING AHEAD: UPCOMING FIXTURES AND AMBITIONS

Flamengo’s next match is against Cruzeiro, who are ninth in the league with 27 points. Flamengo aims to close the gap to the league leaders and secure a top-four finish. The addition of Emerson, combined with Wesley’s sale, shows the club’s commitment to competing at the top level.

Emerson personally hopes that a strong spell at Flamengo leads to a recall to the Brazil national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
