End of an Era: Luka Modrić Confirms Real Madrid Departure

Real Madrid legend Luka Modrić has announced he will leave the club after the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. This marks the end of his 13-year career at the Santiago Bernabéu. The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder will play his final match at the Bernabéu this Saturday against Real Sociedad.

FAREWELL CONFIRMED

In a heartfelt letter on social media, Modrić said his departure is “the moment I never wanted to come, but that’s football, and in life everything has a beginning and an end.” The decision was mutual between the player and the club. Real Madrid confirmed the agreement to part ways after the Club World Cup in the United States this summer.

Modrić joined Real Madrid in 2012 and has had one of the most successful careers in football history. The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner has won a club-record 28 trophies with Los Blancos, solidifying his legacy as one of the greatest midfielders of all time.

A LEGENDARY CAREER

Even at age 40 this September, Modrić has continued to make significant contributions. He appeared in 34 LaLiga matches this season, though he started only 16. This reduced role reflects Real Madrid’s transition to a younger core of players like Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Federico Valverde.

In his farewell message, the Croatian star thanked the club, especially president Florentino Pérez, his teammates, coaches, and the fans. “I want to sincerely thank the club… I’ve experienced incredible moments, comebacks that seemed impossible, finals, celebrations, and magical nights at the Bernabéu,” Modrić wrote.

Real Madrid is facing significant changes this summer after a disappointing season. They didn’t win a major trophy, which hasn’t happened since 2021. Beyond Modrić’s departure, head coach Carlo Ancelotti is also leaving. Xabi Alonso is reportedly set to take over as manager.
