Eric Dier Set to Join Monaco After Bayern Munich Exit Confirmed
Bayern Munich’s sporting director, Christoph Freund, announced defender Eric Dier will leave the team at the end of the season. The England player is set to join AS Monaco on a free transfer.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Bayern Munich has confirmed Eric Dier won’t extend his contract with them. The 31-year-old defender will leave after 18 months. Dier joined Bayern from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024, first on loan, then permanently. Bayern wanted to extend his stay, but Dier chose a new challenge with AS Monaco in France.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Dier will join Monaco after 45 appearances for Bayern, scoring twice. The defender, who can also play as a midfielder, will sign a three-year contract with the Ligue 1 team. Monaco’s sporting director, Thiago Scuro, played a key part in bringing Dier to the team. Monaco wants experienced players as they aim for Champions League qualification.
Bayern is leading the Bundesliga and could secure the title this Saturday against RB Leipzig. If they win, Dier and teammate Harry Kane will earn their first major trophies before Dier’s exit.
WHAT BAYERN’S DIRECTOR SAID
Freund said, “We had good talks about a contract extension, but he informed us he’ll leave. Even a two-year contract was an option. He had another offer where he could sign for longer. We respect his choice. He had a great time here, and we wish him well. I hope he leaves as a champion.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR BAYERN?
With Dier leaving, Bayern Munich is seeking replacements. Freund said they are “well positioned” in defense, but they’re watching the market. They’ve been linked to Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah, though Freund said this isn’t an issue now. The club is also dealing with injuries to Alphonso Davies and Hiroki Ito.
Bayern’s focus is on the match against RB Leipzig. A win would secure the Bundesliga title and give Dier a fitting farewell before joining Monaco.
