FC Porto Close to Signing Gabri Veiga from Al Ahli

FC Porto are almost ready to sign Spanish midfielder Gabri Veiga from Al Ahli. The clubs are finalizing the deal. The 22-year-old midfielder is ready to take a big pay cut to join Porto and return to European football. This is an important deal for Porto just before the new season starts.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The Portuguese club’s president confirmed that talks between Al Ahli and Veiga are progressing well. The Saudi club allowed Porto to negotiate directly with the player. Veiga wants to move, even giving up over 90% of his current salary. This is more than €10 million annually. Remaining details are being finalized, but the transfer is expected to be announced soon. Porto hope to register Veiga in the special transfer window opening on June 1.

GABRI VEIGA’S IMPACT AND PORTO’S SITUATION

Veiga had a huge impact at Al Ahli. He scored 11 goals and registered 11 assists in 48 appearances since his €40 million move from Celta Vigo in 2023. He also helped them win the AFC Champions League. Porto, meanwhile, are preparing for life in the UEFA Europa League, after missing out on a Champions League spot. They finished third in the 2024/25 Primeira Liga, just behind rivals Benfica and champions Sporting CP by one point. They were six points above fourth-placed Braga.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR PORTO?

Porto hope to finalize Veiga’s transfer in time for the Club World Cup beginning in June. After this, Porto’s first Europa League match is also approaching, with the draw taking place later this summer. Veiga’s arrival is expected to improve Porto’s midfield as they aim to reclaim the Portuguese title and make a deep run in Europe. Porto’s next fixture is a pre-season friendly, with domestic action restarting in August. Fans will be eager to see Veiga in action and if this move pays off for both parties.
