FC Utrecht have used a €1.5 million option to buy 50% of Miguel Rodríguez’s rights from Celta Vigo. The young forward impressed in the Eredivisie with standout performances such as two goals against Ajax.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The temporary signing of Rodríguez from Celta Vigo last summer has turned into a permanent one after his spectacular season. The Spaniard netted two huge goals to beat Ajax and has been among the standouts in both cup and league matches. Utrecht paid an initial €1.5m to acquire 50% of his rights and can still buy a further 30% for another €750,000.

UTRECHT AND RODRÍGUEZ: A BREAKOUT SEASON

The club, however, can still exercise a further €750,000 option to increase their stake to 80%. There is no buyback clause for Celta Vigo. While front-foot clubs from both Germany and the Netherlands are keeping a close eye on the player, every passing day strengthens the Utrecht-Celta connection, with a potential fee of €2.25m looming large.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR UTRECHT AND THE PLAYER?

Rodrí’s breakout season shows with five goals and three assists from 14 league games. While two goals in five Europa League games aren’t sensational, add to it three assists and you have a regular starter in Utrecht. The Dutch club earned five of their eight Eredivisie wins with the Spaniard on the pitch in addition to three impressive victories over Ajax in league and cup combined – and Rodrigues was a part of both.
