Federico Chiesa Recalled for Liverpool’s Champions League Squad After Leoni Injury

Liverpool have called Federico Chiesa back to their Champions League squad after Giovanni Leoni’s recent injury. The Italian winger is set to return to European action after being left out earlier this season, as confirmed by previous reports.

WHAT HAPPENED?

On September 3rd, Liverpool left Chiesa out of their Champions League squad. UEFA rules limited them because of homegrown player requirements, and Chiesa was notably left out. With only 17 spots for non-homegrown players and competition from prospects like Giovanni Leoni, Chiesa missed out despite his good form and recent contributions. Leoni’s injury now creates an open spot, and Chiesa will take it. Liverpool’s decision is driven by necessity and Chiesa’s recent performances. This season, Chiesa has scored two goals for Liverpool, including one in the Premier League win over Bournemouth, where he came off the bench late to score the winning goal, which was his first Premier League strike, as reported by earlier sources.

LIVERPOOL’S SEASON AND CHIESA’S ROLE

Chiesa joined Liverpool in the summer of 2024 after success with Juventus. He struggled for playing time under new manager Arne Slot, but he helped the club win the Premier League last season. He scored his first league goal for Liverpool against Bournemouth and also netted in the EFL Cup final. This season, Liverpool are first in the Premier League with 15 points from five games, five points ahead of Arsenal, Tottenham and Bournemouth. Leoni, whose injury triggered Chiesa’s recall, played a key role in Liverpool’s youth system and recently made appearances in cup matches.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL AND CHIESA?

Liverpool will face Crystal Palace for the Premier League before visiting Galatasaray for the 2nd match of their Champions League campaign, ahving won the opener against Atletico Madrid. Both teams are chasing the top spot in their respective leagues. With Chiesa’s recall, Liverpool gain more experience on the wings as they aim to progress in Europe. Every game now becomes even more important for both Chiesa and Liverpool as they push for multiple trophies.
