Federico Chiesa Set to Leave Liverpool with Priority on Italy Return

Federico Chiesa is preparing to leave Liverpool this summer, with a preference for moving back to Serie A. After a tough first season at Anfield, the Italian winger is in advanced talks with Napoli, who are the frontrunners for his signature.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Federico Chiesa joined Liverpool in August 2024 but has struggled under both Jurgen Klopp and new manager Arne Slot. He has played just 466 minutes of competitive football across all competitions, with only 41 of those coming in the Premier League and none from the start. His limited role has prompted him to seek escape from Anfield in search of regular football. Discussions continue between Liverpool and Napoli on a loan deal, with the possibility of an obligation or option to buy. Chiesa is keen for a move, with Fiorentina and AC Milan also expressing an interest in signing him.

WHY THE MOVE MATTERS

Liverpool are set for changes this summer following their title-winning season, as the club reshapes the squad ahead of Slot’s first full campaign. Chiesa is about to be let go by the club, who are set to lose several big stars, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, with the right-back closing in on a move to Real Madrid. Chiesa’s destination appears to be Napoli, who are also chasing the signing of his Liverpool team-mate Darwin Nunez.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHIESA AND LIVERPOOL?

The Reds are due to face Manchester United in the Community Shield in what will be the traditional curtain-raiser for the English football season. Liverpool finished at the summit of the Premier League table last time out, as Manchester United claimed FA Cup success with a win over Aston Villa in the final. Chiesa, meanwhile, could not feature for the match, if the move to Napoli is sealed in time, as the winger will have to fly to Italy in the next few days to complete, if the two clubs are able to reach an agreement.
