Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy will miss the rest of the 2024/25 season. He suffered a serious thigh injury during the Copa del Rey final. The French left-back is not expected to play again until the start of the 2025/26 season.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Mendy tore a tendon in his right leg during the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona. It has been a tough season for him, with several injuries. He has been out four times since last August. Mendy played 31 games in all competitions this year, making him the fifth-most used defender for Real Madrid. The club confirmed he will be out for up to three months. He will miss the rest of the season and the Club World Cup this summer.
REAL MADRID’S DEFENSIVE WOES
Mendy’s injury adds to Real Madrid’s defensive problems. The team is already missing several key players. Antonio Rudiger is also out for the rest of the season after knee surgery. The squad has been thin with other defenders missing games. Real Madrid is four points behind league leaders Barcelona with five La Liga matches left. Fran Garcia and David Alaba are expected to play left-back for the rest of the season. This includes a big game against Barcelona on May 11.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR MENDY AND REAL MADRID?
Mendy will focus on recovering and hopes to be ready for the start of the 2025/26 season. Real Madrid needs to win every game to catch Barcelona. They have Celta Vigo next. Celta is 15th and only three points above the relegation zone. Real Madrid must rely on their remaining players to keep their title hopes alive. They are dealing with one of their toughest injury situations in recent years.
