Feyenoord Complete Signing of Gonçalo Borges from FC Porto
Feyenoord have signed Portuguese winger Gonçalo Borges from FC Porto. The 24-year-old moves to the Dutch club after both teams finalized paperwork for the €9 million deal, which includes €2 million in add-ons.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Borges leaves FC Porto after 10 years to join Feyenoord. Porto initially rejected Feyenoord’s offer, but the clubs agreed on a deal worth up to €11 million. The winger played 88 games and scored two goals for Porto, both of which were last season during his best spell yet. He also recorded six assists in 38 appearances, proving his value from the wings. The move comes as Feyenoord prepare for Igor Paixao’s departure to Marseille.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The signing is part of a busy summer for Feyenoord, who are preparing for an important new season. Under new manager Robin van Persie, the club hopes to improve on their second-place finish in the Eredivisie behind PSV Eindhoven. Borges will deliver pace and trickery to their right wing position after the team scored the second-most goals in the league last campaign. Borges was a solid performer at Porto, breaking into the first-team picture in 2021 and quietly contributing ever since.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Borges will join Feyenoord’s squad in preseason as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. The team’s first game of the new Eredivisie season is a tough match against AZ Alkmaar, who finished third last term, just six points behind Feyenoord. Borges could make his debut in that fixture as he looks to continue his steady rise. Meanwhile, Porto will move on from losing one of their key players after finishing third in the Primeira Liga last season.
