Fiorentina Closing in on Victor Lindelöf Signing

Fiorentina are close to signing Swedish defender Victor Lindelöf. The former Manchester United player wants to join. Both sides are working on the final contract before finalizing the deal.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Lindelöf left Manchester United earlier this summer and became a free agent. Fiorentina made the 31-year-old their main target, and talks have progressed nicely. Lindelöf reportedly rejected an offer from Everton because he wanted to come to Florence. The club are hoping to offer a two-year deal with an option for a third. Meanwhile, Lindelöf will have to lower his wages of £6m per season. Fiorentina are leading the race for Lindelöf’s signature as negotiations progress rapidly, according to reports confirming the club’s intent. Brentford were also interested in the Sweden international but he seems destined for Italy.

FIORENTINA AND LINDELÖF: THE CONTEXT

Lindelöf racked up nearly 300 appearances for Manchester United, scoring four times and registering seven assists. However, injuries and increased competition meant his spell at the Red Devils ended with reduced game time. He played just minimal minutes during the last season. Fiorentina see Lindelöf as a replacement for young defender Pietro Comuzzo, who has attracted interest from Saudi side Al-Hilal, which is ready to pay €35m for the player. Although the defender is happy at the club and is not keen on leaving despite interest in the summer. Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A last season, qualifying for the Conference League, and will be eager to improve upon that this season with a stronger squad to bolster their options.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Fiorentina’s next game is at home to Torino in Serie A as they try to climb the league table. They sit in mid-table, having drawn their opener to Cagliari in the early 2025/26 standings. They will hope a player of Lindelöf’s calibre can add to their defence and push Fiorentina’s challenge for a European spot. Torino lost their opener to Inter Milan, and having finished 10th last season, will want to score points as soon as possible. It will be a crucial early test for Vincenzo Rosso’s side as they approach a busy schedule. Fans will be keeping an eye on whether Lindelöf signs in time to play the key fixture.
