Francesco Farioli Leaves Ajax After Just One Season

Francesco Farioli has told Ajax he will resign as head coach immediately. He ends his time at the club after just one year.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Ajax announced on Monday that manager Francesco Farioli has left after one season. The 36-year-old Italian, who started in May 2024, was Ajax’s first foreign manager in decades. The coach told the club’s board, staff, and players about his decision. Farioli’s team finished second in the Eredivisie, closely trailing PSV Eindhoven for the title until the end of the season. Even with strong play and better defense, Farioli decided to leave, feeling exhausted both emotionally and physically after the season’s end.

AJAX’S SEASON UNDER FARIOLI

Farioli made an immediate impact at Ajax, who were in crisis the year before. He introduced a strategy focused on strong defense and rotating players, which gave Ajax the league’s best defensive record. The team reached first place in late March after a key away win over PSV but ultimately finished second. Farioli voiced pride in his players and staff, saying they restored hope despite falling short. Their second-place finish guarantees a spot in the next Champions League.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CLUB AND COACH?

With Farioli gone, Ajax needs to find a new manager for a tough season that includes Champions League qualifiers. The club plans to build on the defensive and player development foundations Farioli set. Farioli, who might find a job in Serie A, remains open to future opportunities. Ajax’s upcoming match is the Dutch Super Cup against league champions PSV, who finished six points ahead. PSV also scored more against Ajax, setting up another fierce competition between the top Dutch teams.
