Gabriel Heinze Set to Join Arsenal’s Backroom Team

Gabriel Heinze, former Argentina and Manchester United defender, is set to join Mikel Arteta’s coaching staff at Arsenal. Heinze will fill the spot Carlos Cuesta left after he departed to take a managerial role at Parma.

HEINZE JOINS ARTETA AT ARSENAL

Heinze, 47, will join Arsenal before the 2025-26 Premier League campaign. He will work alongside assistant manager Albert Stuivenberg, set-piece coach Nico Jover, and goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana. Heinze and Arteta are old pals from their playing days at Paris Saint-Germain. They played together for the Ligue 1 club in the 2001-02 season and have a close bond. Heinze last managed Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina, leaving in November 2023.

EXPERIENCE AND SUCCESS

Heinze brings bags of top-level experience with him. He won league titles with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Marseille, and Paris Saint-Germain during his playing days. Capped 72 times by Argentina, Heinze also boasts an Olympic gold medal, won at Athens 2004. Since retiring in 2014, he has endured a mixed managerial career, but he is highly respected for his tactical acumen and leadership qualities. Arteta will look to tap into all of these to help put Arsenal on top of the Premier League once again.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season, narrowly missing out on the title as Manchester City finished third in the 2024-25 Premier League season. However, Arteta’s side went on to claim Champions League glory, beating Paris Saint-Germain in the final to hoist the trophy. Heinze will hope to help his old pal ensure a strong finish in the league this season, as Arsenal are three points behind current leaders Chelsea.
