Gasperini’s Future at Atalanta in Doubt Despite Contract Offer

Gian Piero Gasperini’s future with Atalanta is unclear after a key meeting with club officials. Despite leading the team to a third-place finish in Serie A and securing Champions League qualification, the veteran coach might be leaving the club.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Gasperini met with Atalanta‘s management to discuss his future. Although he has a contract until June 2026, the club has offered a new deal to extend it to 2027, with an option until 2028 and a salary increase. Despite these favorable terms, Gasperini’s departure is possible after today’s discussions.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Since taking charge in 2016, Gasperini has transformed Atalanta into a consistent Champions League qualifier. This season, Atalanta secured third place with 70 points and guaranteed Champions League football next season. They will finish their campaign against Parma. Gasperini led the team to the 2023/24 Europa League title last season and earned three Serie A bronze medals during his tenure.

WHY GASPERINI MIGHT LEAVE

Despite Atalanta’s success, Gasperini has expressed concerns about the club’s future. He said, “For the first time in nine years, I feel that it will be very difficult to repeat ourselves. A result that might seem normal, like qualifying for the Champions League, will be complicated. And this is something we need to discuss.” Gasperini may want long-term guarantees, particularly regarding the transfer market. Atalanta could lose key players like Ederson, Ademola Lookman, and potentially Mateo Retegui this summer.

WHAT NEXT FOR ATALANTA?

With Gasperini’s future uncertain, Atalanta must decide if they can provide the guarantees he desires. Several clubs are reportedly interested in Gasperini, with Roma being a keen suitor following Claudio Ranieri’s impending retirement. If Gasperini leaves, it would mark the end of a remarkable nine-year period that saw Atalanta rise from mid-table obscurity to one of Italy’s most consistent performers in domestic and European competitions.
