Gianluigi Donnarumma Signs Long-Term Deal With Manchester City

Manchester City have signed Gianluigi Donnarumma. The Italian goalkeeper joins from Paris Saint-Germain on a five-year deal. He could stay at City until 2030.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Donnarumma joins Manchester City for about €39 million, a sum that reflects PSG‘s reduced asking price from €50 million to this new figure. He replaces Ederson, who is heading to Fenerbahce after eight years and 350 matches with the club. Donnarumma, 26, leaves PSG after winning four Ligue 1 titles and the Champions League in 2025. He will earn €15 million in his first season, with salary increases later. Before joining City, he’ll play for Italy in World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Israel. City believe Donnarumma is a better long-term option than Ederson.

THE SITUATION AT MANCHESTER CITY

Manchester City aim to defend their Premier League title this season. They have won their first match at Wolves with an emphatic 4-0 victory, before losing abck to back games against Tottenham and Brighton, putting them mid-table. Donnarumma’s arrival brings competition for James Trafford, who has been the starting goalkeeper for the last three games. City’s next game is against Manchester United, who are one point above them in the table. Winning this match is important as the team looks to gain momentum before the Champions League group stage opener next week. As of now, City currently trail in the league behind Arsenal and Liverpool.

IMPACT ON PSG AND THE SEASON AHEAD

Paris Saint-Germain must quickly find a new goalkeeper after losing Donnarumma. The French champions had already benched him in pre-season matches when contract talks broke down. With the transfer window closing, they need a quick replacement to defend their title successfully. Donnarumma, meanwhile, brings Champions League-winning experience to England. He’ll face pressure to perform, especially with concerns about his fit in Pep Guardiola’s system. Although his distribution is in question, his shot-stopping skills could be crucial as City aim for more trophies in both domestic and European competitions this season. Donnarumma expressed disappointment in leaving after a successful stint at PSG.
