Gio Reyna Joins Borussia Mönchengladbach After Long Transfer Battle

Gio Reyna has agreed to leave Borussia Dortmund and sign with Borussia Mönchengladbach. He’ll stay in the Bundesliga despite strong interest from Italian club Parma.

WHAT HAPPENED?

After negotiating with several clubs, Reyna chose to join Borussia Mönchengladbach instead of Parma. Gladbach’s offer was about €7-7.5 million including bonuses, which convinced Dortmund. According to reports, Borussia Mönchengladbach have matched Parma’s offer, and they will also keep a 15 percent sell-on clause for the 22-year-old midfielder. Reyna is expected to have a medical test and sign his contract soon.

Parma offered nearly €6 million, but they couldn’t reach an agreement with Dortmund, which reported wanting more than €6 million for Reyna. Reyna’s move keeps him in Germany, as he looks for a fresh start after tough times at Dortmund. Last season, he played 26 games but only 627 minutes, scoring two goals and assisting one across all competitions. He also spent time on loan at Nottingham Forest but didn’t play regularly.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Reyna joins Mönchengladbach hoping to revive his career. The American international was once one of the Bundesliga‘s top young talents, valued at €42 million two years ago. However, injuries and inconsistency reduced his minutes and performance—he has managed just 1,218 minutes with nine starts over the past two years at Borussia Dortmund. Mönchengladbach, led by coach Gerardo Seoane, finished 10th last season and want Reyna to add creativity and attack behind the striker. Reyna will be with fellow USMNT player Joe Scally, who is a regular at Gladbach. Reyna’s lack of play at Dortmund has also affected his national team chances, with only one cap in 2025.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Gladbach start the new Bundesliga season against Hamburg on Sunday. With Reyna, they aim to move higher in the standings. Dortmund, meanwhile, play St. Pauli as they try to get back to the top after finishing fourth last season. Dortmund are working to finalize deals for Chelsea players as they prepare for the new season.

Reyna’s focus will be on getting fit, securing a starting spot, and regaining national team attention. It’s unclear if he’ll start immediately, but his arrival should increase competition and improve quality as Gladbach seeks better results than last year.
