WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester United lost to League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties in the second round of the Carabao Cup. Grimsby led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Charles Vernam and Tyrell Warren. United goalkeeper André Onana made two costly mistakes. United fought back in the second half. Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire scored to make it 2-2. The match went to penalties, and Grimsby won the long shootout 12-11. Bryan Mbeumo missed the key penalty for United. This was the first time Manchester United have been knocked out by a fourth-tier team in a cup competition.

GRIMSBY’S UNLIKELY HEROES

Grimsby fans enjoyed a memorable night. Goalkeeper Christy Pym made important saves in the shootout. Grimsby had not been doing well in League Two this season, but their hard work and teamwork helped them hold off United’s late chances and win. The crowd at Blundell Park watched their team, who are 17th in League Two, defeat one of England’s most famous clubs.

MANCHESTER UNITED’S NIGHTMARE CONTINUES

Manchester United finished 15th in the Premier League last season. This season has also started badly. They have just one point from two league games before this match. After the unexpected defeat, coach Ruben Amorim criticised his players’ attitude. He apologised to fans and admitted Grimsby were the “best team.” United’s next game is against Burnley in the Premier League. Currently, United are in the lower half, two points behind Burnley, who won one of their two opening matches. Manchester United are also planning squad changes as manager Ruben Amorim rebuilds the team. Grimsby will face Colchester United in League Two, hoping to continue their good form after this cup win.
