Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola congratulated Liverpool on their Premier League win. The Reds were crowned champions after beating Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 at Anfield.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Liverpool won the Premier League with four games to spare. They became the seventh team in league history to win the title this early. Their 5-1 victory over Tottenham put them out of Arsenal’s reach. In a show of sportsmanship, Guardiola praised Liverpool, saying, “Well deserved, no doubt about that, a fantastic team… Liverpool, congratulations.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
This is Liverpool’s second Premier League title and their 20th top-flight championship. They now share the record for most English league titles with Manchester United. Liverpool fans are delighted because they can finally celebrate a Premier League title in person. In 2019-20, when they last won, fans couldn’t attend matches due to COVID-19. Coach Arne Slot has done a great job in his first season, leading Liverpool to 25 wins.
Manchester City, who have won eight league titles, are planning to bounce back under Guardiola. His congratulatory message hinted at a stronger challenge next season.
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk was thrilled to win with fans present: “This is the most beautiful club in the world. We deserve this. We are going to enjoy the next couple of weeks and take it in. I was desperate to win it for them (the fans) and all the fans around the world, and for us as well.”
Liverpool’s top scorer Mohammed Salah said the win with fans was special: “It is incredible to win this with our fans. This is 100 per cent better than last time, especially with the fans. We have a different group now so to show we can do it again is something special.”
WHAT’S NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?
Liverpool have four league matches left, finishing with a home game against Crystal Palace on May 25. This will include the trophy presentation. The club has announced special championship merchandise for fans to mark the win.
Guardiola and City will focus on rebuilding and challenging for the title next season. They’ll want to stop Liverpool from starting a new era in English football.
