WHAT HAPPENED?
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has criticised midfielder Matheus Nunes’ technical qualities amid inconsistent performances.
The midfielder was signed by the club in the summer of 2023 for approximately £53 million. Nunes initially had a promising start at the Etihad Stadium but has struggled to maintain form. Over time, Guardiola has shifted him into a right-back role in response to team needs, following Kyle Walker’s departure. While praised for his physical attributes, concern remains about his suitability for a midfield role.
Nunes once again played in defense during Manchester City’s recent goalless draw against Manchester United. His performance at right-back was solid in parts but highlighted his discomfort and the ongoing adjustment to the new position. In a post-match press conference, Guardiola discussed whether Nunes could thrive in his current role or potentially adapt to other positions.
The manager took the opportunity to candidly discuss Nunes’ perceived limitations in midfield, while also backing him to improve and contribute as a full-back for the remainder of the season.
WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID
When asked about Nunes’ ability to adapt to different positions, Guardiola explained, “As a manager, I have to do it and adjust a lot of things because we are in a situation with not many players in that position. We are trying something else to see if it works. Hopefully, it will work until the end of the season.”
He added, “He can become a good right-back for the physicality. I think he’s not a player to play in the middle because he’s not clever enough, in composure. Hopefully, with time, he can learn this, but we are in a situation right now and we make a solution without a recognition of the situation.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Nunes can take inspiration from teammates like Kyle Walker, who previously faced challenges but managed to establish himself as a key player in a similar role. Guardiola hopes that Nunes will use this opportunity to grow and become an impactful member of the squad during the critical stages of the season.
However, Guardiola’s comments regarding Nunes’ limitations in midfield have drawn mixed reactions from both fans and analysts. Many supporters have expressed frustration over the manager’s public criticism of the player, especially given the team’s broader struggles with injuries and form this season. As City approaches crucial matches, Nunes’ ability to adapt and improve in his new role will likely remain under close scrutiny.
The citizens are still fighting for a title in the FA Cup, and for a top-4 finish in the Premier League where they currently sit in 6th place but only 1 point behind 4th Chelsea.
