Hansi Flick Adamant On Keeping Fermín López At Barcelona

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made it clear he does not want to lose Fermín López this summer, as transfer speculation grows around the young midfielder.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Amid interest from several clubs, including Chelsea, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Bayern Munich, Flick addressed the rumors in a recent press conference. He said: “I don’t want to lose any player because we need their quality. It will be a long season. I want them all.”

Chelsea have recently made a swap offer involving Christopher Nkunku, but Barcelona turned it down. Despite starting only 12 league matches last season, López managed to score six goals, making his mark even as a rotation player in a squad that won the treble. The player signed a new contract until 2029 and has continued to state his commitment to Barça with the goal of staying with the club for his entire career.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fermín López has been growing in status within the Barcelona squad since his breakout two years ago. His flexibility and determination make him a trusted option for Flick in a squad built for depth. Barcelona’s remarkable 2024/25 campaign saw them secure all three major trophies: LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa. Even with limited minutes, López contributed meaningfully across competitions. His long-term contract and the confidence shown by both management and the player himself indicate that despite transfer links, he will remain central to Barcelona’s plans as they look to defend their titles in 2025/26. Chelsea, for their part, finished the Premier League season in fourth and are seeking to add depth to their squad following an inconsistent campaign.

What’s next for Barcelona and López?

Barcelona opened their 2025/26 LaLiga season last weekend with a win against against Mallorca. The team heads into the campaign as overwhelming favorites and will want to keep their full squad available. Fermín López is expected to feature throughout the season, sharing responsibilities with star signing Dani Olmo. The Blaugrana finished the last campaign atop LaLiga, four points clear of Real Madrid and above Atlético Madrid.

Levante, their next opponent, was promoted from La Liga 2 and lost their opener 2-1 after a 92nd minute goal by Alavés. With Flick having publicly backed López, fans can expect the young midfielder to earn increasing opportunities as Barcelona balance league play and early Champions League group stage fixtures in September.
