Harvey Elliott Joins Aston Villa In £35m Switch From Liverpool

Harvey Elliott has officially left Liverpool. He signed with Aston Villa in a deal worth £35 million, which includes a buy-back clause in the agreement.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Elliott, 22, moves to Aston Villa first on loan, with Villa required to finalize the £35 million purchase at the end of the season. Elliott is eager for regular game time after making only one Premier League start last season for Liverpool. A report confirmed that RB Leipzig had shown interest, alongside West Ham and Fulham, but Elliott ultimately chose Villa, aiming to build on his impressive form with England’s Under-21 team, where he was named Player of the Tournament at the 2025 Under-21 European Championship.

The deal includes a buy-back clause for Liverpool and a sell-on clause, demonstrating the club’s continuing value for Elliott.

LIVERPOOL AND ASTON VILLA’S CURRENT SITUATION

Liverpool are currently first in the Premier League, two points ahead of Chelsea after three matches. Their busy summer front-loading increased competition and played a role in Elliott’s departure. Reports indicate that Liverpool has added Alexander Isak to their squad this summer, further limiting Elliott’s chances for playing time.

Aston Villa sits in the relegation spots, after winning one point from three matches, as they hope to qualify for European football again. Villa has struggled with creativity in the midfield, managing no goals scored in three matches. Elliott is one of two playmakers signed by Villa on deadline day, along with Jadon Sancho.

WHAT NEXT FOR ELLIOTT AND ASTON VILLA?

Elliott should play a key role in Aston Villa’s midfield when they face Everton away from home after the international break. The two teams have similar ambitions for the season, making this match significant in the race for European spots. Meanwhile, Liverpool will play Burnley, who have three points from three matches and are a relegation contender. If Elliott performs as he did at the U21 Euros, he could quickly become an integral player for Villa, and the buy-back clause means Liverpool may closely monitor his progress.
