Heung-Min Son Announces Emotional Departure From Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-Min Son has announced he will leave the club this summer, ending a ten-year stay in North London. Son called it the “most difficult decision” of his life during a press conference in Seoul.
SON CONFIRMS HIS SPURS EXIT
Heung-Min Son spoke directly to fans and media in Seoul, saying, “I have asked to leave Spurs. My decision has been made, I did my best here and I need a fresh challenge now. It’s the most difficult decision of my life. I came to north London as a kid. I leave as a young man.”
He was joined by Tottenham manager Thomas Frank during the announcement. The 33-year-old forward believes now is the right moment for a new adventure.
A DECADE OF MEMORIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. Over ten seasons, he has become one of the club’s most beloved and consistent performers, scoring more than 150 goals in all competitions.
Last season, Son scored 16 Premier League goals and provided 8 assists, helping Spurs finish fourth in the league and qualify for the UEFA Champions League. This followed a season where he took over as captain after Harry Kane’s departure in 2023. Son’s impact on and off the pitch made him a key figure for both Spurs and South Korean football.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR SON AND SPURS?
Son has not yet revealed where he will continue his career. Several top clubs in Europe and Asia are expected to show interest in the forward after his announcement.
Tottenham, meanwhile, now faces a major transition. With the Premier League season set to begin in two weeks, Spurs will be seeking to fill the void left by their captain. Their opening fixture sees them face Burnley, with both teams aiming for a strong start. Tottenham have identified the need for new signings to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season, with rumors surrounding potential moves for players like João Palhinha as they begin their season next week when they play Champions League winners PSG for the European Supercup trophy.
