Heung-min Son to Leave Tottenham After a Decade, LAFC Emerges as Leading Destination

Tottenham Hotspur captain Heung-min Son has confirmed he will leave the club this summer, ending a remarkable ten-year spell in North London amid ongoing talks with MLS side LAFC.

SON ANNOUNCES DEPARTURE

Heung-min Son, Tottenham’s talisman and captain, announced at a press conference held in Seoul that he has told the club and new manager Thomas Frank of his decision to leave this summer. His announcement follows approaches from several clubs, including teams from Saudi Arabia and Major League Soccer (MLS). Negotiations are now ongoing with Los Angeles FC (LAFC), which have advanced rapidly over recent days, making MLS the likely next step in his career.

SON’S LEGACY AT TOTTENHAM

Son leaves behind an extraordinary legacy at Tottenham. Since joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, he has made over 390 appearances, scored more than 150 goals, and registered over 70 assists across all competitions. Last season, he was again the standout performer with 18 goals and 7 assists in the Premier League. His leadership helped Spurs to a fifth-place finish, narrowly missing Champions League qualification by just three points. Last season, Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League, showcasing their competitive edge (source).

LOOKING AHEAD FOR SON, SPURS, AND LAFC

Should Son’s move to LAFC be completed, he will join a side currently leading the MLS Western Conference, three points ahead of Seattle Sounders. Tottenham, under new manager Thomas Frank, now face a key challenge to fill the void left by their departing captain. Their first Premier League match of the 2025/26 season is against newly-promoted Burnley, with both teams looking for a strong start of the season. The club will have to act swiftly to reinforce before the new campaign, while LAFC hope Son’s arrival will power their push for a first MLS Cup triumph.
