Ilkay Gündogan will stay at Manchester City for longer. He has activated a part of his contract that keeps him at the team until June 2026. Coach Pep Guardiola confirmed this, but hinted there might be changes this summer.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Gündogan’s contract was automatically extended because he played enough matches this season. The 34-year-old has been important for the team, especially with many injuries affecting other players. He has played 43 matches in all competitions and has started 31 games. Guardiola said Gündogan’s performances were similar to his role in the team’s winning season two years ago.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Gündogan’s contract extension comes at a time of change for Manchester City. Kevin De Bruyne is already leaving this summer, and Gündogan is the oldest outfield player now. Some people question if he will play a long-term role because his performance has been inconsistent. He has played more in defense, which is why he has only two goals and three assists. Yet, his experience and intelligence are still important for a team in transition.

WHAT’S NEXT?

As summer approaches, Guardiola has hinted City may continue to renovate their roster beyond the departures of De Bruyne and a few others, which means Gündogan’s status could change. However, Gündogan’s adaptability, professionalism and winning mentality have all been key during a difficult season – and remain invaluable assets in a developing team. City will be hopeful he can have a positive impact in the final months before they consider longer-term additions.
