James Maddison Set to Miss Most of the Season After Serious ACL Injury

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that star midfielder James Maddison needs surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). He is expected to miss most of the 2025/26 season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Maddison, 28, had a serious knee injury during pre-season, tearing his right ACL. Reports confirm that he was taken off the field with a knee problem, falling down in pain and requiring assistance on a stretcher. Tottenham announced on Thursday that he requires surgery and faces a long recovery. The club hasn’t set a return date yet but will provide an update later this year as he heals.

MADDISON’S IMPORTANCE TO SPURS

Maddison has been vital for Tottenham since joining. He scored eight goals and added 10 assists in the 2024/25 Premier League season. His creativity helped Spurs reach, and win the Europa League final, although he wasn’t part of the squad in the title deciding match against Manchester United due to injury. With Maddison out, Tottenham loses one of their main playmakers, and the new season starts this weekend.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR TOTTENHAM AND THE TRANSFER MARKET?

Maddison’s injury leaves a big gap in Tottenham’s midfield as they prepare for their season opener against Burnley, who were promoted from the Championship to England’s first tier this season. Spurs are now looking for new players to help cover Maddison’s absence. Fans are eager to see how the club responds and how soon Maddison can return.
