Jay Gorter to Join Pafos from Ajax in Permanent Move
Jay Gorter is set to leave Ajax and join Pafos FC. The Cypriot side has agreed to a deal for the Dutch goalkeeper. Gorter will soon undergo a medical and sign his contract. Ajax will keep a sell-on clause as part of the transfer agreement.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The 25-year-old goalkeeper is moving from Ajax to Pafos FC. Gorter, who came to Ajax in 2021 from Go Ahead Eagles, found few first-team chances. He was not in Ajax’s current plans. After only 16 appearances for Ajax and a loan to Aberdeen in 2023, he is looking for regular playtime. He will sign a three-year deal after his medical, and Ajax has a 20% sell-on clause in the €2 million deal.
CONTEXT FOR AJAX AND PAFOS
Ajax had a tough 2024-25 season, finishing in 3rd place in the Eredivisie and missing Champions League qualification. New manager John Heitinga made team changes, with Vitezslav Jaros and Remko Pasveer chosen over Gorter. Pafos wants European qualification after finishing fourth last season. They are strengthening their team for the new campaign. For Gorter, Pafos offers a fresh start and more playing time in a competitive league.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR BOTH CLUBS?
Gorter’s first goal is to become Pafos’s number one and help improve their fourth-place finish. Pafos starts their league campaign next month, aiming for a top-three spot. Meanwhile, Ajax will continue with Jaros and Pasveer competing for the starting role. Ajax’s next match is a home friendly against Red Star Belgrade as they get ready for the new season. Pafos hopes Gorter will make an immediate impact, especially as rivals Aris Limassol and APOEL also strengthen their squads this summer.
