Jeremie Frimpong Completes Move to Liverpool in €35m Deal
Liverpool have signed Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen for €35 million. The Netherlands defender is the first new player for the Premier League champions this summer.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Frimpong joins Liverpool after they paid his €35m release clause. The 24-year-old scored five goals and gave 12 assists in 48 matches last season. He replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold, who moved to Real Madrid recently. Frimpong can play as a right-back or in a more advanced role on the right flank. The transfer will be finalised once the window opens on Sunday.
LIVERPOOL’S REBUILD TAKES SHAPE
Frimpong is a huge addition for new manager Arne Slot, who won the Premier League narrowly in his first season at the club. With Alexander-Arnold leaving, Liverpool needed a fresh attacking option down the right. Frimpong registered 29 assists and scored 28 times across three seasons at Leverkusen. He spent back-to-back campaigns in the Bundesliga Team of the Season. At Liverpool, he will play on the right side of defence while covering for Mohamed Salah when he goes for the Africa Cup of Nations next season.
WHAT NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?
Liverpool are at the start of a new era under former Tottenham and Manchester City boss Slot. They need reinforcements across the team to reset their focus on the title in the coming season. Though they remain committed to signing Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz, other reinforcements are also possible. Frimpong will join his new team for pre-season training at the AXA Training Centre, and could make his debut when they face Sheffield United in the Community Shield next month.
