Jeremie Frimpong Set to Sign Liverpool Contract Within 24 Hours
Dutch right-back Jeremie Frimpong is close to becoming Liverpool’s first summer signing. He is set to sign his contract in the next 24 hours after passing his medical exam.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Frimpong completed his medical at Liverpool before finalizing his move from Bayer Leverkusen. The 24-year-old Dutch international started his medical tests on Sunday and finished on Monday. Liverpool triggered Frimpong’s release clause, worth about £29.5 million (€35 million). The deal is in its final stages before being officially announced. The former Celtic player is expected to sign a five-year contract, earning about £100,000 per week at Anfield.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
This transfer shows Liverpool’s planning for the future, especially with Trent Alexander-Arnold reportedly going to Real Madrid. Interestingly, Liverpool approached Frimpong last summer, but then-Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso convinced him to stay another season. The Dutchman has been a star for Leverkusen since joining from Celtic for £11.5 million in January 2021. His arrival will create competition with Conor Bradley, who recently signed a contract extension with Liverpool until 2029. Frimpong is expected to wear the number 30 shirt, which he has worn since the 2019/20 season.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR LIVERPOOL?
Frimpong will officially become a Liverpool player when the transfer window opens on June 1. An announcement is expected soon. This signing marks the beginning of new manager Arne Slot’s time at Liverpool as he builds his squad for the next season. The Reds are finishing their Premier League campaign with a final away match at Brighton and will try to integrate Frimpong during pre-season training. Celtic could benefit from a sell-on clause worth about £5 million. With Liverpool securing Bradley’s future and signing Frimpong, they seem to be strengthening their right-back options for years to come.
