João Mário to Join AEK Athens on Loan from Besiktas
AEK Athens have agreed to sign Portuguese midfielder João Mário on loan from Besiktas. The deal should be completed soon. This marks a new start for the experienced player in Greek football.
WHAT HAPPENED?
João Mário joined Besiktas from Benfica for the 2024/25 season. Now he’s moving to AEK Athens on loan. This happens after Besiktas changed many players this summer. The 31-year-old midfielder played 51 games for Benfica last season, scoring nine goals with four assists. But after just one summer in Istanbul and with few chances under new management, he’s moving again. He wants regular play and new chances in Greece.
JOÃO MÁRIO’S IMPACT AND AEK ATHENS’ SITUATION
João Mário will greatly improve AEK Athens’ midfield. The club finished fourth in the Greek Super League last season, and they aim to challenge Panathinaikos and Olympiacos for the title in 2025/26. This season, AEK started well and are third with 8 points from four games. They are just two points behind leaders Olympiacos and ahead of PAOK and Aris by one point. João Mário’s experience could be key as AEK Athens want to do better in both local and European competitions.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR BOTH CLUBS?
AEK Athens play next against Aris, who are just below them in the standings. A win would help them catch up with the leaders. Besiktas are rebuilding their team after finishing fourth in the Turkish Super Lig and missing out on Champions League qualification. João Mário is expected to join the AEK squad for their next game. Fans hope his skills and leadership will help them win trophies this year.
