Johnny Cardoso Joins Atletico Madrid On Long-Term Deal From Real Betis

Atletico Madrid have signed Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis. The U.S. international has penned a deal until June 2030.

The 23-year-old becomes the latest addition to Diego Simeone’s ranks as Atletico continue their quest to sign a new midfielder ahead of the new season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Cardoso‘s move to Atletico was completed after the two clubs reached an agreement earlier this summer. The transfer fee is said to be over €30 million (£25m/$32m), recognising Betis‘ valuation of their player. The midfielder joined the Seville-based club in January 2024 and started producing heroics that first earned him a contract extension before Simeone identified him as his top choice to strengthen his side ahead of the 2025-26 campaign.

WHY CARDOSO MATTERS FOR ATLETICO MADRID

The USMNT player’s move to Wanda Metropolitano comes as Atletico aim to bounce back into the top four of La Liga. The Rojiblancos reached another Champions League qualification last season, finishing third, but failed to be a real contender for the La Liga title, that ended up being won by Barcelona. Betis ended up lower and qualified for the Conference League, with Simeone offering Cardoso – who brings versatility and energy – an opportunity to return to the UCL.

According to previous reports, Atlético Madrid finished third in La Liga last season.

WHAT NEXT FOR CARDOSO AND ATLETICO MADRID?

Cardoso will join up with his new teammates as they prepare for Atletico’s La Liga 2025-26 season opener against Espanyol. Simeone’s side have been placed behind Real Madrid and Barcelona in the title race by bookmakers, and the new signing will be eager to represent them for the first time and take up his position in central midfield.
