Jonathan Rowe Set to Join Bologna From Marseille in Big-Money Deal

Jonathan Rowe is close to signing for Bologna after the Italian club agreed a deal with Marseille worth up to €19.5 million plus a future sell-on clause. Reports confirm that Bologna have agreed on personal terms with Jonathan Rowe.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Bologna and Marseille have agreed on a transfer for English winger Jonathan Rowe. The deal includes a fixed fee of €17 million, €2.5 million in possible add-ons, and a 10% sell-on clause for Marseille, as noted in reports. The 22-year-old will have his medical in the next 24 hours. Rowe joined Marseille last season and impressed with his pace and direct style. Reports say Bologna moved quickly after discipline issues at Marseille saw Rowe and Adrien Rabiot placed on the transfer list following a locker room incident after a defeat to Rennes. Bologna worked fast to agree terms as they look to strengthen their wide areas for the new campaign.

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR BOLOGNA AND MARSEILLE

Bologna finished last season just outside the European places in Serie A, ending ninth, but they earned a spot in European competition after winning the Coppa Italia in the 2024/25 season. Their first match of the new season is against Roma, who finished just above them in fifth. Adding Rowe gives Bologna a new attacking threat. He scored 3 goals and added 3 assists in 28 Ligue 1 games for Marseille last season, marking him out as a key young talent. For Marseille, the transfer helps ease tensions after a turbulent start to the campaign and brings in vital funds. The French side lost their opening Ligue 1 match against Rennes and sit 15th early in the season.

WHAT COMES NEXT FOR BOLOGNA AND ROWE

With Rowe about to complete his medical, Bologna hope to have him available for their opening game against Lazio. The team is focused on improving their attack and challenging for a top-six finish. They will have their league opener at the Stadio Olimpico, where they play AS Roma, a team aiming to qualify for the Champions League. For Rowe, this move is a big chance to play in Serie A and push for senior England selection. Marseille, meanwhile, will need to regroup and reinvest after a tricky summer and a slow start in the league.
