Jonathan Tah Signs Four-Year Deal with Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich have signed German player Jonathan Tah from Bayer Leverkusen. The defender has agreed to a contract until June 2029.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Tah, who is 29, completed his medical and signed a four-year contract with Bayern Munich. He had earlier announced he would leave Leverkusen when his contract ended. Tah spent ten years at Leverkusen and was key to their recent success under coach Xabi Alonso. He joins Bayern as a free agent, bolstering a defense that new coach Vincent Kompany is rebuilding. Bayern aim to reclaim their top spot in Germany after not winning the Bundesliga last season.

BAYERN AND LEVERKUSEN: SEASON IN REVIEW

Bayer Leverkusen had an incredible 2024/25 season, winning the Bundesliga for the first time and reaching the UEFA Europa League final. Tah was outstanding during their campaign. Bayern, on the other hand, finished second in the league, five points behind Leverkusen, and went out of the Champions League in the semi-finals. Their defense was leaky, and Kompany was quick to address that by signing Tah. His addition is expected to solve Bayern’s defensive issues, as his leadership and top-level experience should make an immediate difference.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Tah will join his new Bayern teammates in July for pre-season training. They start the new Bundesliga season at home against Freiburg, who finished sixth last year. Bayern trail champions Leverkusen by five points and are determined to catch up. Leverkusen, meanwhile, will aim to defend their historic title without Tah. The first meeting between Bayern and Leverkusen next season will be highly anticipated, with both teams keen to establish themselves as Germany’s top club.
