Manchester United’s coach, Rúben Amorim, has said that Joshua Zirkzee, their forward player, probably won’t play in the important Europa League quarter-final second leg against Lyon because of a hamstring injury.

What Happened?

Zirkzee hurt his hamstring in a recent game where United lost 4-1 to Newcastle United. The Dutch forward started the game but had to leave early in the second half because of the injury. Before the injury, he almost scored, but goalkeeper Nick Pope saved his shot. After the game, Amorim said Zirkzee probably won’t be ready for the Lyon game. This injury is bad news since Zirkzee was key in the first leg of the Europa League tie, scoring a crucial goal for a 2-2 draw in Lyon.

The Bigger Picture

This injury is a huge problem for Manchester United, who are having a tough season. They’re currently 13th in the Premier League and really need to do well in the Europa League for any chance of winning a trophy and qualifying for the Champions League. Zirkzee joined United last summer and has been scoring important goals in the knockout stages. Without him, Amorim has limited options for forwards as teenager Chido Obi can’t play in European matches. Rasmus Hojlund, who’s had a hard time with his form, will likely lead the attack against Lyon.

What’s Next?

Manchester United will try to recover and prepare for the second leg against Lyon at Old Trafford. The score is currently 2-2, and Lyon is expected to play strongly at United’s home. Amorim highlighted the importance of focusing and fixing mistakes that cost them a win in the first leg. If United advances, they will face either Rangers or Athletic Bilbao in the semi-finals, keeping their hopes for a successful season alive.
