Leon Bailey Nears Aston Villa Exit as Roma Talks Advance

Leon Bailey is set to leave Aston Villa, with talks progressing for a loan move to AS Roma that includes a permanent buy option. The Jamaican winger, who has struggled for regular minutes last season, is Roma’s preferred target as they look to strengthen their attack after a tough 2024-25 Serie A season.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Leon Bailey was left out of Aston Villa‘s matchday squad as negotiations with AS Roma moved forward. Discussions between the two clubs have focused on an initial loan for the 28-year-old, with an option for Roma to buy him at the end of the season for around €25 million. Bailey scored 3 goals and made 4 assists in 1950 minutes for Aston Villa last season, but has recently lost his place in Unai Emery’s plans.

ROMA’S PLANS AND VILLA’S SEASON SO FAR

AS Roma are targeting Bailey to add pace and creativity on the wing. The Giallorossi finished just outside the Champions League spots last season and are looking for more attacking options as they aim for a top-four finish in Serie A. Aston Villa, meanwhile, will start the 2025/26 Premier League this weekend, having finished sixth in the Premier League last season, qualifying them for the UEFA Europa League. Bailey’s departure follows the exit of Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle. The club is already searching for new attacking players to fill the gap left by Bailey as they prepare for their next league fixture.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR BAILEY AND BOTH CLUBS?

If the deal is completed, Bailey will join Roma ahead of their next Serie A match against Bologna. Villa’s upcoming Premier League game is against Newcastle, who finished just above them last season, and took the last Champions League spot. The move could help Bailey revive his career with more playing time and offer Roma another option in their push for European qualification.
