Leon Bailey Set for Medical Ahead of AS Roma Move
Leon Bailey is about to join AS Roma. The Jamaican winger will have his medical tests in Rome on Tuesday afternoon. Once that is complete, he will sign for Roma as their latest attacking player.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Roma and Aston Villa have agreed on the transfer for Bailey. Roma will pay a loan fee of between €2-3 million for the season, and there’s an option to make the transfer permanent for €22 million, according to reports. The entire deal could be as much as €25 million. Bailey is set to land in Rome on Tuesday morning and will have his medical tests before signing the contracts.
WHY BAILEY IS LEAVING ASTON VILLA
Bailey has played in the Premier League with Aston Villa for four seasons, but he had an average 2024-25 campaign. He played 38 matches, registering three goals and four assists in just under 2,000 minutes. He was often rotated by manager Unai Emery. With only two years left on his current deal, Bailey wants to move where he can play regularly. Villa have sanctioned the loan, with an option to buy, in order to balance their squad and finances. A recent update confirmed Bailey is leaving Aston Villa, with talks progressing for a loan move to AS Roma that includes a permanent buy option.
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ROMA?
Roma have been busy reinforcing their attacking line, with the likes of Paulo Dybala, Matias Soulé, and Stephan El Shaarawy already in their squad. Last season, they finished fifth with 69 points in Serie A, just two points away from Champions League qualification. Their next match is against Bologna. New coach Gian Piero Gasperini is aiming for Champions League football and hopes that Bailey can provide more pace and impact in wide areas. If the forward passes his medical and adapts quickly, he could soon start featuring for the Italian side in their subsequent fixtures and help them close the gap to the top four positions.
