Liverpool Agree Personal Terms With Marc Guehi As Talks Advance

Liverpool have agreed personal terms with Marc Guehi. Talks are ongoing with Crystal Palace for a fee around £35 million, including add-ons. Young defender Giovanni Leoni is also keen to join. The club is working on both deals.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Liverpool have started talks with Crystal Palace for Guehi. He has one year left on his contract and may cost around £30 million plus £5 million in add-ons. As noted by Palace chairman Steve Parish, the club might need to sell him to avoid losing him for free next year. Liverpool are also interested in 18-year-old centre-back Giovanni Leoni from Parma. He is a talented Italian prospect.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Liverpool, the current Premier League champions, are strengthening their defense. This is due to Jarell Quansah moving to Bayer Leverkusen and a small injury to Joe Gomez. Guehi, who is Palace’s captain and an England international, has played well since 2021. His contract situation makes him a valuable signing. Leoni offers depth and long-term potential. Liverpool want to mix experience and youth in their defense.

FORM AND STANDINGS CONTEXT

Last season, Palace depended a lot on Guehi’s leadership. They finished 13th in the league and lifted the FA Cup and Community Shield, so losing their captain would be a significant blow. Liverpool need reliable players at centre-back for their title defense, especially after some players left and others got injured. Guehi is regularly picked for England, showing his good form and fitness. Leoni has made his mark in Serie A and is seen as a future investment.

WHAT NEXT?

Liverpool and Palace are still discussing the deal’s structure and add-ons. A total near £35 million seems possible. If they agree, medical tests and final papers could come soon. Guehi could then join before the early season matches. Liverpool also plan to talk more with Parma for Leoni. They want to complete both deals instead of choosing one.
